    History

    Drupal was begun in 2000 by two students, Dries Buytaert and Hans Snijder who went to the University of Antwerp. It was initially a project just for fun that was meant for college students to all have a solid connection together in their dorms but turned into something much bigger. The software was officially released to the public in 2001 which allowed others to work on the platform.

    Requirements

    You will need an Apache 2.4.4 or higher or a different web server that has PHP support. You will need a database connection such as MySQL, MariaDB, Percona Server, PostgreSQL, or SQLite. You will need at least 1GB of ram and you will need PHP 8.1.

    Hosted/Self-Hosted

    Drupal provides hosted on-premise data centers that you can choose from to fit the needs of your website. You can choose your self-hosting options if you do not want one of the provided choices.

    Cost

    Drupal is free open software that you can download and use whenever. You may need to pay for additional add-ons that are needed, for example, you may want themes, hosting, and other functions.

    Userbase

    Drupal has a big use base and is one of the widely used CSM platforms and the open-source aspect creates a bigger community. There are around 495,000 million live websites that use Drupal in 2023.
